Below freezing, the battery management system blocks charging entirely to prevent lithium plating on the anode. The Tesla Powerwall itself uses nickel-manganese-cobalt chemistry (NMC), which handles cold somewhat differently than LiFePO4. Both are mature technologies. Neither is "wrong." What matters is whether the system is designed around your climate, your loads, and your utility rate structure. The best battery on paper underperforms if it's sized wrong for your building.

And on environmental claims: battery brands love the word "recyclable." Per the FTC Green Guides, that claim has to mean the product is actually recyclable in areas where at least 60% of consumers have access to recycling programs. So ask the installer, in writing, where the battery goes at end of life. Vague answers are a red flag. So is a quote that doesn't break out components. Line-item pricing is the baseline for trust—especially for a purchase that'll still be in your building ten years from now.

Scenario 3: You're Installing a Service Disconnect

The short list: solar panels, an inverter, a battery bank, a disconnect, and correctly sized wiring. The specifics depend on your building, your loads, and your local code. But the components on paper are simple. What makes or breaks a project is the same thing that makes or breaks any purchase: a vendor who tells you the whole story, and the full price, upfront.
